Before the days of Google Maps and convenient smartphone navigation, it was very easy to get lost in Italy. In fact, it was guaranteed.
Back in the day, to get from point A to point B, you had to use a road atlas, which is essentially a large folded map featuring a dizzying array of roadways. There was no other option, literally and figuratively.
In this photo, Romain De Marchi, Jonas Emery, and Mathieu Garcia were trying to figure out how to get to the European Open in Livigno, Italy. The year was 2002. None of them knew how to read a roadmap. As such, they’d already driven five hours in the wrong direction. Not awesome.
When Google Maps launched three years later in 2005, the travel experience for the world’s elite snowboarders became much easier to navigate, and in many ways much bigger. Less time spent driving around meant more time for making friends, riding new spots, bagging shots, visiting cultural sites, doing charitable works, helping senior citizens cross the street, and partying like ravers on all-night benders.
